Armadillos!!

Sunday we had a wonderful beach day, of which I was too big a chicken to take my smartphone or any electronics so I have no pictures. I got my tan on and we hit up Malificent later. It is a really great take on Sleeping Beauty and I highly recommend it! Monday and today were much the same, I did a lot of reading scientific papers. Here are the titles of a few so you can feel my pain.

Re-alimentation in harbor seal pups: Effects on the somatotropic axis and growth rate.

Seasonal influence on the response of the somatotropic axis to nutrient restriction and re-alimentation in captive steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus)

Validation of heterologous radioimmunoassays (RIA) for growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IFG)-I in Phocid, Otariid, and Cetatiean species.

Needless to say it has been a bit brutal so far. She even went on to tell me that the assays I will be doing take six days and sometimes I will have sixteen hour days and working some weekends. Don't ask me what assays really are because I still don't know. I will be working with radioactive material so I am having to do presentations and taking quizzes on them and I have had homework to do every night. So definitely not a vacation but at least I am getting paid very well. This work I am going to be doing is really intimidating just because it is all about chemistry, which was never my strong suite. In fact, it was never even a suite, it was a tattered bag that I wore. But dang it by the end of this I will be at least ok at it!!!! On the absolutely positive side of life, I saw three little armadillos just chilling on campus today!!! They were rummaging through the dirt in the flower beds looking for yummies and they were not at all afraid of humans. I took a bunch of pictures of them, getting really close and finally I couldn't resist, I petted one. Yes yes I know it was a bad idea but sooooo irresistible! They were just so darn cute!! They were wild ones so it was really odd it just let me touch it, but I just have a way with animals ;)

Saturday at the Zoo!!!

So last Saturday we had our first big out in the Jacksonville world adventure as a group and we went to the Zoo here. I have not been to many zoo's, but I can say that I am sure this one is above the average AMAZING! The exhibits were so spacious and nicely kept and they had many different ongoing research projects and it was just wonderful. They had all kinds of animals (typical of any zoo) and they had them separated by native region. The land of Asia was pretty cool but my favorite was the South America exhibit. I mostly have a bunch of pictures from the day but we were also able to view some tiger training. Then we participated in a little bit of behavioral research, but mostly we just gawked at all the pretty animals. Here, take a gawk yourself :)

This is baleen from a whale
 A bunch of cetacean skulls...

These little guys are whale mites! They look like little aliens and they are what attaches to the whales and gives them their identifying white markings.

Loggerhead Seaturtle skull, bigger than Jake's!

Manatee skull

The infamous Bonobo chimps!

This fabulous guy just became my new all time favorite bird, sorry Killdeer

Butterfly Hollow

It was a great day at the zoo, thats for sure. Elyse and I managed to hit every exhibit and see all the animals. Success!!!
